Demand Gen Report examines how AI is changing demand generation by requiring teams to emphasize strategic judgment, trusted content, and sales-marketing alignment instead of content volume.

The CMO Role Changes With AI

The modern CMO position has shifted from five years ago as AI prompts questions about which marketing tasks can be automated and which require human oversight. According to Demand Gen Report, content that previously ranked and converted now competes with machine-generated answers that reach buyers first. Demand gen leaders must therefore produce content visible in an AI-mediated environment and convert the resulting attention.

AI Adoption Metrics and Barriers

Ninety-six percent of marketers report using AI, and 47 percent rank it as the top trend they are most excited about this year. Forty-five percent cite working more efficiently and 23 percent cite creating more personalized content as AI's main contributions. The 2026 ABM Benchmark Survey found AI earns an average effectiveness score of 7.3 out of 10 for improving campaign outcomes. Top barriers include difficulty connecting AI to the existing tech stack at 43 percent and lack of specialized internal AI skills at 37 percent. Only 22 percent of teams say they rely on proven, data-driven strategies, while nearly 50 percent operate in reactive mode due to reduced budgets and shifting buyer behavior.

Human Judgment Remains Central to Pipeline

According to Demand Gen Report, AI eliminates low-value work so teams can reinvest time in strategy and relationships. Only 7 percent of marketers believe AI will lead to job loss over the next three years. Human sellers stay critical for closing the confidence gap even as AI reshapes how B2B buyers research solutions. Demand gen teams therefore focus on setting up the human moments where deals close rather than handling all execution through automation.

Leadership Priorities for AI Use

According to Demand Gen Report, effective teams audit where AI removes low-value work, prioritize use cases tied directly to pipeline, govern AI interactions with customer data and brand voice, and provide continuous training as tools evolve quarterly.
