SaaStr Warns Against CPTO Hires at B2B SaaS Firms Over $100M ARR

SaaStr argues CPTO roles at scale-stage B2B companies create abstraction layers that slow AI feature development and product decisions.

CPTO Roles Appear at Scale-Stage B2B Companies

Chief Product & Technology Officer positions are appearing at B2B companies north of $100M ARR, particularly those shifting toward agentic and AI capabilities, according to SaaStr. The publication states that 95 times out of 100 the title signals a problematic structure rather than a solution.

Combined Role Produces Neither Product Nor Technical Leadership

SaaStr reports that individuals in CPTO positions typically stop coding and lose proximity to architecture decisions, production issues, and code reviews. The same leaders also step back from weekly customer calls and detailed work on churn drivers or competitive gaps.

The article notes the role often attracts candidates focused on board-level strategy discussions, org charts, and VP hiring rather than direct execution.

Separate Product and Engineering Leaders Required at $100M–$300M ARR

SaaStr states that even at $100M–$1B ARR, companies need a VP or SVP of Engineering who remains technical enough to evaluate AI agent capabilities and architecture choices. A separate Head of Product must stay immersed in customer workflows and daily calls.

Combining the functions into one position, the source says, inserts an abstraction layer that reduces speed. The publication adds that a $150M ARR vertical SaaS company does not require a CPTO and that even Oracle at much larger scale benefits from distinct technical and product leadership.

CEO Disengagement Often Drives the Hire

SaaStr identifies CEO withdrawal from product details as the frequent underlying issue. When product and engineering leaders cannot align, the article recommends the CEO resolve the conflict directly instead of creating a new role. Recommended structures include strong VP or SVP engineering and product leaders both reporting to the CEO through at least $300M ARR, or distinct CTO and CPO roles beyond that scale.

Hiring a CPTO in the current AI environment, according to SaaStr, places companies at a disadvantage against competitors that maintain direct builder leadership in both product and engineering.
