A September MarTech Conference session titled “The engagement illusion: What actually gets attention and what gets ignored” examined why increased content production has not translated into stronger audience attention.

AI Content Flood and Buyer Research Shifts

Marketing leaders now have access to more content tools, impressions, and engagement data than ever before, according to MarTech. The panel noted that the explosion of generative AI content has flooded every channel and left buyer attention fragmented. Prospective customers now turn to tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini to research vendor track records, surface authentic reviews, and check third-party media coverage before contacting sales. Brand consistency across every touchpoint has become a foundational requirement.

Expertise Over Output Volume

The panel stated that demonstrating deep expertise remains the single most effective way to build trust when buyers evaluate prospective partners. Claiming authority on a slide deck or landing page is not enough; brands must prove it across owned and third-party channels. Measuring marketing performance solely by output volume creates a trap, because tracking success by the amount of content published focuses on effort rather than impact. Visibility without trust is just noise, and no amount of campaign spend can compensate for a broken product or poor customer experience.

Metrics and Cross-Team Alignment

Familiar metrics such as clicks, pageviews, and form fills still provide operational context, but relying on them as isolated indicators falls short, according to MarTech. B2B buyers navigate non-linear paths across social networks, review sites, media outlets, and AI engines. The panel added that repeated touchpoints do not automatically equate to meaningful relationships. Marketing, sales, customer success, and operations cannot treat their KPIs as isolated silos, because buyers experience one unified brand. A single friction point in customer support can neutralize months of marketing initiatives.

Trust as Core Asset

As digital content becomes increasingly automated, authentic human experiences become more valuable, according to MarTech. Building trust, fostering community, and delivering real expertise represent a brand’s strongest competitive advantage.
