A SOCi analysis of Local Visibility Index data found expanding restaurant chains averaged an LVI score of 61.4 while contracting chains averaged 46.6. The 14.8-point gap appeared across search, reviews, social, and AI channels. Brands opening hundreds of locations included Culver’s, Texas Roadhouse, and Nothing Bundt Cakes. Brands closing hundreds included Wendy’s, Papa John’s, and Pizza Hut.

AI Recommendation Rates

Expanding chains appeared in ChatGPT recommendations for about 20 percent of tested queries compared with roughly 3 percent for contracting chains. The same pattern held for Gemini and Perplexity. Expanding brands also received higher AI-assigned star ratings on all three platforms. Only 1 to 11 percent of brand locations received AI recommendations across the three platforms, while 35.9 percent appeared in Google’s 3-Pack.

Search and Review Performance

Expanding chains appeared in Google’s 3-Pack for 35.3 percent of tracked searches versus 14.4 percent for contracting chains. They earned Yelp’s top organic ranking 55 percent of the time versus 29.3 percent. Average Google ratings reached 4.39 for expanding brands and 3.82 for contracting brands. Average Yelp ratings reached 3.65 versus 2.49. Expanding brands responded to 72.4 percent of Google reviews compared with 43.6 percent for contracting brands.

Social Engagement Differences

Expanding brands recorded a 3.45 percent local social engagement rate while contracting brands averaged 0.13 percent. Expanding brands maintained about five times more local followers on average. The analysis attributed higher engagement to localized content rather than uniform corporate posts.

The findings are based on SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index data comparing eight expanding and eight contracting restaurant brands, according to MarTech (https://martech.org/why-growing-restaurant-chains-win-at-local-search-and-ai-visibility/). The same source notes that AI recommendations require higher standards of data accuracy, reputation, and differentiated content than traditional search listings. The report states that review response rates represent an operational lever marketing teams can adjust in weeks.
