Marketers Shift Focus to Directing AI Agents

MarTech reports that marketers are moving from executing tasks themselves to directing AI agents as tools handle more hands-on work.

Marketers Direct AI Agents as Execution Shifts

Few marketers have made the shift to directing AI agents instead of doing the work themselves, according to MarTech. The more common approach remains using AI to help with individual tasks rather than directing it across work.

AI agents can handle more of the hands-on work marketers have traditionally done themselves. This shifts where value comes from. Instead of being the person who does all the work, the role becomes deciding what gets done, directing it, and judging the result.

The Shift From Doing to Directing

In most marketing departments the person who gets noticed is still the one who can do it all. Write the brief. Build the campaign. Pull the report. That is still what most people think a great marketer looks like.

That approach is changing as AI agents take on more of the execution. One way is to use a single AI agent for a small task such as writing an email or summarizing a report. Far fewer are running several AI agents together, treating themselves as the conductor of an orchestra rather than the one playing every instrument.

Judgment Becomes the Critical Skill

Instead of spending time writing a campaign brief line by line, the job can be handed to an AI agent. Time is then spent deciding what the campaign should accomplish. Instead of pulling a report by hand, an AI agent pulls it while focus moves to what the numbers mean and what to do next.

An AI agent will hand over a mediocre campaign brief with total confidence and will not flag that it is mediocre. Marketers must catch that themselves. The tools just got good enough to make directing multiple agents possible, according to MarTech. Most people are still learning basics like writing a decent prompt.

Building AI Agent Skills

Pick one task done every week and hand it to an AI agent. Pay close attention to the moments when stepping in to say this is right or this needs to change. Try running two AI agents together on one project instead of one. A few years from now directing AI agents well will be the normal way marketing gets done, the same way using a spreadsheet became normal.
