SaaStr published guidance for B2B SaaS founders stating that companies between $1m and $20m ARR need great VPs across roles to move the needle, noting that many founders have not yet worked with one.
VP of Sales Remains the Accepted Starting Point
Founders at $1m-$1.5m ARR typically conclude they must hire a VP of Sales to scale from a handful of reps to ten or more to reach $5m-$10m ARR. According to SaaStr, even founders burned by early VP of Sales hires still recognize the need for the role, unlike other functions.
VP of Product Required at Enterprise Scale
SaaStr states that a VP of Product becomes essential once customer counts reach 1,000 and feature counts reach 10,000. The role owns customer meetings, synthesis of requirements, and delivery of enterprise-grade capabilities that a CTO and engineering team alone cannot sustain.
VP of Marketing Owns Revenue Commitments
SaaStr notes that only a VP of Marketing can fully own lead and opportunity commitments alongside the VP of Sales and drive growth from $1.5m to $10m ARR. Junior marketing hires provide help but cannot carry the full number or accelerate growth at the same pace.
VP of Customer Success Drives Second-Order Revenue
According to SaaStr, a VP of Customer Success can own installed-base revenue growth targets, attack churn and near-churn, implement processes, and recruit teams while partnering directly with the VP of Sales rather than acting only as support.
