Backstory Appoints Shilpa Varma as Chief Technology Officer
Backstory names Shilpa Varma, formerly of HubSpot and Box, as CTO to lead engineering for its revenue answers platform.
Backstory, the revenue answers platform for enterprise sales teams, announced the appointment of Shilpa Varma as Chief Technology Officer. Varma will lead Backstory’s engineering organization and own the company’s technical strategy, architecture and execution.
Background of the new CTO
Varma joins Backstory from HubSpot, where she was Vice President of Software Engineering for Data Hub, Agents and Automation. At HubSpot she launched Data Hub at INBOUND 2025 and built Agent Builder. Earlier roles include Senior Director of Engineering for Content Hub at HubSpot, Vice President and Chief Software Architect at Box, and positions at Microsoft, Yahoo and ItsOn.
Focus areas at Backstory
Varma will focus on capturing what companies and their customers say to each other and connecting every signal to the right accounts and opportunities. Her early priorities include shaping three foundations: a data platform to unify customer data, a machine learning platform to find meaning in it, and an orchestration platform to act on it.

The appointment brings experience from systems that reached FedRAMP High standards and from unified customer views built for revenue teams.
