B2B Teams Face Challenges Running Valid CTV Incrementality Tests
Account-level holdouts and qualified pipeline metrics are required for reliable CTV incrementality results, according to MarTech.
Most connected TV incrementality tests fail before a single ad runs because the test produces a number that looks convincing without proving anything. Coming into this year cross-platform measurement ranked as a top priority for 72% of advertisers, up from 64% in 2025, according to the IAB’s 2026 Outlook Study.
Attribution versus incrementality
Attribution focuses on identifying which advertising exposure deserves credit for a conversion. Incrementality asks whether that conversion would have happened without the ad. The most common incrementality testing method compares people who saw the ad with those who did not and reports the difference as uplift. This approach captures effects of targeting rather than the impact of the ad itself.
Randomization at the account level
CTV has no persistent cookie and ads are served to households and IP addresses. The account is the correct unit of randomization for B2B programs. Target account lists are divided into two groups with half eligible for CTV advertising and the other half excluded from all advertising including streaming. This aligns with how B2B reporting tracks accounts through the sales pipeline.
Testing methods and success metrics
An account-matched holdout with hard suppression is the strongest test most B2B teams can run. Control accounts’ IP addresses and device IDs are excluded from every related line item. A geo-matched market test uses a difference-in-differences design. Media mix modeling is a correlation between spend and outcomes rather than causal proof. The primary metric should be qualified pipeline or opportunities generated from target accounts according to MarTech. Faster signals such as target account site visits, increases in branded search, improved paid social metrics, and demo requests can indicate whether the test is working before pipeline matures.
Statistical significance and control construction
Real incrementality requires deciding before a single impression runs which accounts will not be advertised to. The withheld group serves as the control. What happens to that group is what would have happened without exposure. Everything the exposed group does above that baseline is incremental according to MarTech.
